Fact is: you could be spending a ton of time trying to fix a big problem, when really all you need to do is fix one tiny problem and everything else will sort itself.

Seriously. The solution will take much less time, much less effort and much less money to fix.

And get ready for this…

The only tool you really need to sort this out is a three letter word.

So, let’s start out with the example Rich gave.

Imagine your business is a chain dangling on the end of a crane.

The chain has 10 links in it and is supposed to be able to lift 400lbs.

Now, those 10 links each represent an element of your business.

And those 400lbs represent your weekly profit of £400.

OK? Cool.

If everything was working well, each link in the chain would be able to handle 400lbs of stress… and your business would make £400 a week.

That would mean the performance was equal to the potential.

But there’s a problem.

For some reason the chain can only handle 200lbs… and your business is only making £200.

You’re not sure what the problem is, so you strengthen each of the 10 links by 200lbs…

In the case of your business, you work flat out on all 10 elements of your business and improve your weekly profits by £200.

So now, on the face of it, the problem is solved.

The chain can handle 400lbs… and your business is making £400 a week.

But hang on there.

We’ve put a load of extra time and effort into strengthening all 10 links of the chain and trying to improve all 10 elements of your business…

Yet we’re only making what we were already supposed to make.

That’s crap, right?

So, let’s go back to that 10 link chain…

The big problem – your main constraint (hence the theory’s name) – is that your chain isn’t performing as it should.

Another way of saying that is that its performance is not equal to its potential.

Why?

No, that’s it!

You just need to ask ‘why?’ And you need to keep asking it until you get down to the simplest solution.

Why isn’t the chain working?

Because it snaps when you put over 200lbs on it.

Why does it snap?

Because one of the links must be weak.

Bingo.

Now you can focus on each link and find out which one is the weak one.

Once you identify it, you can just concentrate on fixing that one weak link.

That’s a lot less effort, right?

And just think what happens when you apply that to your business…

The big problem: we’re not making as much money as we should be.

Why?

Because we’re not selling enough products, maybe.

Why?

Because we haven’t got enough customers?

Why?

Because we haven’t got any list building function in place.

Bingo.

Now you can focus on your list building, get the customers, sell the products so your potential equalling your performance.

And you can use the time and effort you’ve saved to focus on other avenues to make more money.

Because instead of flogging yourself silly trying to cover everything, you’ve focused it down to a much simpler problem and solved that.
